Are you killing time?
We hear that expression a lot, and it sounds innocent enough. But, aside from murder, the definition of killing is eliminating or depriving. Considering how valuable time is, killing time is the last thing we want to do.
When we kill time, we deprive ourselves and others of the benefits of our God-given talents. We eliminate what could have been and miss the opportunities that open doors bring.
On the other hand, it doesn’t mean that we have to stay busy. Busyness has become our badge of honor as proof that we’re successful and in demand. We can equally use it to escape the things that are most important. Going from one task to the next without stopping doesn’t allow time to find out what we really should be doing.
We each have only been given 24 hours in a day, and we need to set time for the things that matter most.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:...” It goes on to talk about a time to be born, to die, to plant, to uproot, to kill, to heal, to build, to weep, to laugh, etc.
We need first and foremost to connect with the maker of the universe, God, because it’s impossible to understand what we were created for if we don’t know the Creator.
Verse 1 goes on to talk about “a season for every activity under the heavens”. God has designed certain events to happen in each unique season. It’s all part of His amazing, awesome plan for the universe. When man tries to mess with nature, it usually doesn't turn out well.
I’m in a new season, as I just retired, so things look differently to me now. God has opened up opportunities to do things that I had only dreamed of doing. They would have been possible before, but I would have missed out on some important milestones in the lives of loved ones.
Timing is everything. Doing the right thing at the wrong time will never have the major impact it could have as waiting for the right season.
We can never go back and reclaim lost time. Make the most of what’s been given to you.
What season are you in right now? Are you using your time wisely making the most of the opportunities God has placed in front of you? Regardless of your age, you have a purpose, and you matter.
