What's Your Fatigue Costing You?

When you're struggling with fatigue, people don't usually see the toll it's taking on their daily life. Undetected, it can lead to weight gain, depression, isolation, guilt, or thinking that you're just plain lazy.

Because it happens gradually, you don't realize that you're performing at less than your best. You notice that you're more tired than usual, but you chalk it up all the hours you're putting in at work.

You catch yourself yawning in the middle of the afternoon, and you have absolutely no desire to do anything strenuous once you get home. Even when you get enough sleep, you never seem to feel well rested.

Few people realize what their lack of energy is doing to their everyday lives. It affects you mentally, physically, and emotionally and can cause problems in your relationships and at work.

Sometimes, it may be seen as a sign of getting older, when in fact, it may be your body telling you there's a bigger problem.

Fatigue can be the result of problems with your thyroid, adrenal glands, anemia (an iron deficiency), a blood sugar imbalance, or still other issues. It's best to seek the advice of a holistic doctor who looks at natural solutions before prescribing pharmaceuticals to find the best treatment plan.

One of the best things you can do in the meantime is look at your diet and lifestyle. Try to eat a well balanced, whole food diet (lots of colorful fruits and vegetables) with minimal processed foods (packaged foods). Avoid caffeine, sugary snacks, and diet foods and beverages. Don't skip meals unless you are intentionally fasting.

Also, it's important to stay active. Sometimes, that's the last thing you want to do, but it will get your body moving, release good hormones, and give you the lift you need. If you need motivation, ask a friend to join you. Going for a walk, taking an exercise class, riding your bike, and even cleaning house are ways to get moving.
